Structural Steel Shade Structure at the Lockhart Animal Shelter

We had the chance to team up with Mikeska Welding Co. on a structural steel shade structure at the Lockhart Animal Shelter - and honestly, this is the kind of work that means something beyond the job itself. Animals waiting for a home deserve a comfortable space, and right now that shelter needed real overhead coverage. That's exactly what this steel frame delivers.

Here's what we were working with - a series of concrete block kennel walls already in place, and the goal was to get a full steel roof frame tied in above them. The framing needed to be plumb, properly supported, and built to hold up through whatever Central Texas weather throws at it. Getting steel posts set and leveled on top of masonry walls takes precision. A bubble that's even slightly off at the base compounds fast once you're running beams across the span.

The roof frame itself is a gabled steel structure with multiple rafters spaced across the ridge. Getting those members hoisted, positioned, and welded in place required a telehandler and scissor lift working together on site. Two-man crews on ladders handling the upper connections while equipment handled the heavy lifting below - that's how you move steel safely and keep the work tight.

Good structural steel work isn't just about putting metal in the air. It's about making sure every connection point is solid, every post is bearing load the right way, and the whole assembly is going to perform for decades without issue. The animals at the Lockhart shelter are going to have covered, shaded space because the steel holding it up was done right the first time.
